N is New Zealand, the basics to start your trip

Are you thinking of going to New Zealand? You cannot miss what I consider the basics to start the trip. The first thing we did, it was to go to the Auckland visitor center and get the following:

– A free prepaid SIM from 2degrees, which combined with the package “19 $ data combo” gives you 30 minutes of calls, 300 SMS and 600MB. Everything you need during a holiday.

– Conservation Campsites booklets (also free). There is a map with all the campings and a booklet for each island which explains each campsite, their facilities, how to get there and their price. DOC campsites are everywhere and run from basic (the toilet is a hole in the ground) to complete, with hot showers and electricity. Prices range from $ 6 up to $ 15. We stayed in many DOC campsites and generally they were well maintained and well located. To give you an idea you can see the post cowshed bay, our little paradise.

– The arrival magazine contains many activities and ideas as well as plenty of discount coupons. We use some of the coupons, such as 15% for kayak rentals in Abel Tasman Park.

If you ask me, I wouldn’t reserve the accommodation in advance. In the five weeks we’ve been in New Zealand, we only had one day in which the first place we went was full (but within a couple of miles there was another). And you, what is the first thing you look for when you arrive in a new country?

New Zealand is SO high on my bucket list! Being Australian and well-travelled means people assume I’ve already been…and I’m embarrassed to say I haven’t! This post is reminded me to get myself over there!

Shame on you, he,he,he. For us it was a 28 hour journey, but hey Spain is next to many countries (like Morocco) and I haven’t been yet to all 😉

Are you still here? We live north of Auckland, if you are headed our way, lets meet up for a coffee or a meal.

We left NZ a month ago, otherwise we would have come for a coffee. Maybe next time or in The Netherlands if you come this way 😉
