Last minute trip: Switzerland

If you follow our Instagram stories, you already know that this week I’m spending a couple of days in Madrid in order to meet our niece. I booked the one-way ticket three weeks ago and we decided that I would buy the ticket back home once our niece. She was born last Sunday, exactly on her due date and so we looked for our return ticket. We wanted to spend a week somewhere in Europe with our caravan. We love mountains, hiking and trains, so as I saw the tickets to Switzerland were cheap, I didn’t doubt and booked the ticket.

But then we have the next “problem”: organizing a week holiday in just a couple of days! Picking which part of Switzerland to visit was difficult, but I talked to a friend who was living near Zürich in the past. And we decided that I will be flying alone with the kids from Madrid to Zürich tomorrow. Paul will pick up us there. In fact, he has already arrived in Switzerland!! He drove today from The Netherlands to our camping in Lucerne (880km). We did a similar thing during our 3 weeks holiday to Slovenia, I flew from Nürnberg to Madrid and skipped the last 700km 🙂

What are our plans in Switzerland?

Switzerland is well known for its train rides and mountains. Our list of things we would like to do was filled quickly. So here it is our activities for a week. Any further recommendations would be really appreciated.

Mount Pilatus

This was a recommendation from our friend. When I looked at Pilatus´ website, I knew we (especially our train lover toddler) definitely would love to go up to the mountain in this cogwheel.

You can also go up and/or down with the aerial cableway and the panorama gondolas. We’ll do both. Going up with the cogwheel and down with the aerial cableway and the panorama gondolas.

Rigi

Rigi was also a recommendation from our friend. Europe’s first mountain railway, with a breathtaking view over the snow-covered Swiss Alps and Lake Lucerne.

You can go up by cogwheel or cable car. If the weather is too bad for hiking, you can also enjoy the mineral bath and Spa in Rigi Kaltbad.

Lucerne & Verkehrshaus

Our camping is just few bus stops from the centre of Lucerne and just around the corner from “Verkehrshaus” (transport museum). We also have the ¨swiss coupon pass¨, which contains 100 vouchers according to the pattern «2 for 1» for many activities and restaurants. A coupon for Verkehrshaus is also included, so no excuse to skip this one.

Zürich & Technorama

I spent a weekend in Zürich 16 years ago (visiting the friend that gave me many tips), but as I remember little, we will also explore the city, take the free funicular to the university and visit technorama (science museum for children). Technorama is also included in the ¨swiss coupon pass¨.

Lake Zürich & Rapperswil-Jona

A visit to Zürich isn’t complete without a boat tour around the like and strolling around Rapperswil-Jona. As well as eating Lindt chocolate 🙂

Felsenegg

Not sure, if we’ll have time, but at the top of Felsenegg there’s a panorama restaurant. The only restaurant with its won funicular!! I found it with the ¨swiss coupon pass¨, as it offers two cheese foundee´s for 29,5 CHF (25 EUR). Let’s see if we can make it!

Interlaken

I read a few posts about Interlaken at Anda’s blog and I really love the pictures. So we will for sure include it in our itinerary.

What else?

Have you been to Switzerland? What would you recommend us?

I spent a week in Zurich years ago, it was in the spring but surprisingly cold and I wasn’t prepared. The lake there is just beautiful. I wanted to see more of the mountains but it was just too cold. When I go back to Switzerland I want to go in the summer and do some hiking. Some of the small towns look really cute too! Thanks for sharing on #TheWeeklyPostcard.

We only spent one day in Lucerne and didn’t have time to go up to Mount Pilatus, but I’d love to return and take this trip. The Swiss Alps are absolutely fabulous. It’s so nice that you can decide “last minute” to go anywhere in Europe. I envy you for it. #TheWeeklyPostcard

It’s great when hubby drives and I fly. I can’t stand the road trips and he likes the long drives. You found some interesting things to do in Switzerland.

The landscapes in Switzerland are just stunning. It’s been years since I visited Switzerland but I’m sure you already have plenty to do, judging by your list! Have fun!!

Switzerland is one of the most picturesque travel destinations we’ve been to! Loved your pictures! When’s the best time of the year to explore Rigi?
