The “gezelligste” Christmas Markets of Friesland (2018)

December is the month of the Christmas Markets and not only in Germany and other Nordic countries, also in The Netherlands there’re a lot of Christmas Markets. The main difference though is that here the Christmas Markets are held one day, so you need to know when and where they are. As well as pick some of them (you won’t be able to ) Here I have an overview of the “gezelligste” Christmas Markets of Friesland. Why these markets? Because they are held in small cities or villages which offers a very cosy atmosphere.

Kerstfair Dokkum

The kerstfair Dokkum will be held on 14th December from 13:30 to 22:00. The city center will have a Charles Dickens atmosphere and there will even be a parade. You can have an impression of this market in this video. Don’t miss the Dickens’ mulled cider and the wines from De Frysling (the most northerly vineyard in the Netherlands).

Charles Dickens Leeuwarden

For the first time, the old coty center of Leuwarden will host a xmas market: Charles Dickens Leeuwarden on 15th December from 14:00 to 22:00 and on 16th from 12:00 to 18:00. It will be the biggest christmas market of the North. There will be music, street artists, theatre and a parade.

Around Christmas, you can enjoy a xmas market in Vlieland from 15:00 to 18:00. You can combine this market with a cranberry compote workshop (Vlieland is really famous for its cranberries).

  1. How lucky you are to be in the Netherlands around Christmas! I love the Christmas Markets. They put you in the right spirit for the holidays. I’d love to visit this country in spring. I’ve heard it’s beautiful. Thanks for joining #TheWeeklyPostcard, Shere.

  2. The Christmas markets in the Netherlands look like they would be a great experience. The Kerstfair Dokkum video makes it look fantastic!

  3. The Netherlands has done it right. I guess I’ll have to do some of the markets there next year. I’m all booked up this year. Darn. Love your pics.

  4. Interesting hearing Silent Night in Dutch though it could have been any language – the music and the sentiments are the same. Listening to it reminded me of the first time I heard the liturgy in Spanish.
I love how these communities continue to maintain traditions that make Christmas special. Living in a city like NY, we’ve become used to the big, the over-the-top that has a lot of glitz and not much else.

  5. Wow! Didn’t know these types of markets were popular in the Netherlands too. I bet these are tons of fun. Hope to spend the season in Europe at least once.

  6. What an awesome post! I love local markets, too, and these seem so quaint! Not sure which is gezelligste, but the market in Balk looks perfect! We’ve made a note. Thanks for sharing on #WeekendWanderlust!

  7. I am embarrassed to confess that I didn’t even know that Friesland *had* Christmas markets until now. The enchanting Charles Dickens atmosphere in Kerstfair Dokkum would put that one tops on our list, especially because local wines are available. 😉
