P is for “planning is as much fun as travelling”

Hoy no lo voy a dedicar a ningún destino, sino a la planificación del viaje. Quizás sea una obsesa de la planificación. Es a lo que me dedico en mi vida no viajera, a desarrollar y mejorar sistemas de planificación y análisis de la rentabilidad (soy consultora SAP). La verdad es que dicho así suena muy bien y aunque veces me tire de los pelos y algún que otro compañero me saque de quicio, en el fondo mi trabajo me ayuda a ser ordenada y a, sin pensarlo, saber cómo organizar el tiempo y el dinero. Pero lo que más me gusta de organizar un viaje, no es la organización en sí, sino el llegar a casa (a veces hasta las narices de mirar a mi portátil) y ponerme a leer y buscar actividades y lugares de nuestro próximo destino. Me gusta dejar volar mi imaginación y una vez que el billete de avión está comprado, lo que me gusta es la cuenta atrás, saber que dentro de poco hay un viaje que nos sacará de la lluvia y del frío holandés.

Today I’m not going to talk about a destination, but about planning. Maybe I’m a planning  freak. It’s what I do in my  non-traveling life, I develop and improve systems for planning and profitability analysis (I am SAP consultant). So said, it sounds very good. Although I sometimes pull my hair and sometimes one of my colleagues drives me crazy, my job helps me to be orderly and, without thinking, to know how to organize my time and money. But what I like at most about organizing a trip is not the organization itself, but to get home  and start reading and searching activities and places for our next journey. I like to let my imagination fly and once the ticket is purchased, I like the countdown, knowing that soon there is a journey that will take us out of the Dutch rain and the cold .

¿Cómo planifico los viajes? Los dos últimos “grandes” viajes (Australia 2012 y Nueva Zelanda 2013) han sido en pareja, Paul y yo solos. Los anteriores surgían uno tras otro. Cuándo estábamos a punto de acabar el viaje decidíamos cual sería el destino siguiente. Una vez en casa me hacía con el Lonely Planet (para mí) y el DK (para Paul) del país y empezaba a curiosear paginas webs de viajes, de turismo y blogs. Si soy sincera ahora es cuando leo más blogs de viajes. Hace poco he descubierto pinterest, que está siendo otra fuente inagotable de ideas y destinos.

How do I plan the trips? The last two “big” trips (Australia 2012 and New Zealand 2013) have been a couple journey, Paul and me. The other trips in the past came one after another. When we were about to end a trip, we decided the destination of the next trip. Once home, I bought the Lonely Planet (for me) and DK (for Paul) of the country and started looking at travel agency webs (see their routes and highlights), tourism and blogs. If I’m honest, now it’s when I’m reading more travel blogs, reading and seeing other’s experiences is a huge source for inspiration  I recently also discovered pinterest, being another endless source of ideas and destinations.

La verdad es que dependiendo del destino y del tiempo que tengamos planifico más o menos cosas, por regla general siempre reservo el alojamiento de las dos primeras y las dos últimas noches. El resto depende. En Sudáfrica llevábamos reservado el alojamiento de casi todas las noches porque en los parques nacionales el alojamiento se llenaba rápidamente. En los viajes con caravanas del estilo jucy, no llevábamos nada reservado, parábamos dónde nos apetecía.

The truth is that depending on the destination and the time we have, I do plan more or less things. In general I always book the accommodation for the first two and the last two nights. The rest depends: in South Africa we booked almost all the accommodation in advance, the accommodation in the national parks is very popular and inexpensive, so it’s   sold quickly. When traveling with caravans like jucy, we did’t book anything, we stopped where we wanted.

Por cierto que yo ya tengo próximo destino, en Mayo voy a Madrid, normalmente no planificaría nada, pero he pedido cita para renovar mi pasaporte, el que tengo caduca en septiembre, en cinco años de servicio ha estado en Sudáfrica, Lesoto, Swaziland, Israel, India, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, China, Australia, Korea, Nueva Zelanda y dos veces en Estados Unidos. Pero no tengo que esperar tanto para volver a irme de viaje, la semana que viene me voy a París,  por trabajo eso sí ¿alguna recomendación de un sitio chulo para cenar? ¿Algún sitio que no me debería de perder? ¿Sois también de los que os gusta organizar viajes o mejor que os lo den hecho?
