AtoZ: C of bocadillo de Calamares
Tercer día del desafío AtoZ y la letra C me ha traído a la mente Calamares. No calamares en general sino los peazo de bocatas de calamares que me comía cuando salía por el centro de Madrid.
Third day of the AtoZ challenge and the letter C has brought to my mind Squid (calamares). No squid in general but the calamari sandwiches that I used to eat when I went through the center of Madrid.
Como buena madrileña os debo de contar una de las costumbres típicas de la capital. Una de esas costumbres que toda persona que no sea de Madrid debería tener en un bucket list: #11 comer un bocata de calamares. Sólo de pensarlo me está entrando hambre.
As good “madrileña” I should tell you about one typical customs of the capital. One of those customs that anyone other than madrileños should have in their bucket list: # 11 eat a “bocata de calamares”. I’m getting hungry with just thinking about them.
Los bocadillos (o bocatas en Madrid) de calamares se pueden encontrar en casi cualquier bar, pero los más famosos son sin duda los de la Plaza Mayor, seguidos por los de Atocha. Quizás los de Atocha sean famosos porque es uno de los sitios dónde se puede coger el buho (autobús nocturno) y no hay nada mejor que meterse un bocata para el cuerpo antes de irse a dormir después de una noche de fiesta.
The bocadillos (called bocatas in Madrid) of calamares can be found in almost any bar, but the most famous are certainly found in the Plaza Mayor, followed by Atocha. Perhaps the Atocha are famous because it’s one of the places where you can catch the “owl” (Madrid’s night bus) and there’s nothing better than eating a bocata before going to sleep after a night of partying.
Paul se ha convertido en un aficionado de los bocatas de calamares y de la Plaza Mayor, no hay navidad que no vayamos a ver las luces del centro y acabemos comiéndonos un bocata de calamares en la casa rua. La plaza Mayor está llena de bares y cafeterías pero sin duda los bocatas de la casa rua son de los mejores. Una vez que estéis por allí podéis completar la ruta gastronómica con un chocolate caliente en San Gines. ¡Qué aproveche!
Paul is now a bocata de calamares and Plaza Mayor lover. There’s no Christmas that we won’t go to watch the Xmas lights downtown and end up eating a bocatas de calamares at casa rua. La Plaza Mayor is filled with bars and cafes offering bocatas, but surely the bocatas from casa rua are the best. Once you are there, you can complete the gastronomic route with a hot chocolate at San Gines. ¡Qué aproveche!

Hi Charlie,
it’s weird, but a lot of fish come first to a big market in Madrid and then it goes to any other place in Spain. So you can expect also fresh fish 🙂
If you like fish, try also “sepia a la plancha” and (for adventurous) “pulpo a la gallega” (octopus) 🙂
