Skydiving: fear made fun

First thing that comes into people’s head when they heard the word skydiving is “why the hell would someone jump out of perfectly working airplane?”. There’re many reasons to not do it, but one to go ahead: “make fun out of fear”.

skydiving: fear made fun, or not?

I know what you are thinking: “it doesn’t seems like you’re having fun there”. No, I wasn’t! but this one was not even the moment in which I was scared at most. Once you are out of the plane there’s no way back. You need to wait until your instructor pulls out the parachute, it’s not your choice either. You don’t have the control. Could you imagine how I was feeling? I, the control freak, not being able to control the situation!! I can only tell that at a point my heart reached 183 bpm!! Don’t you believe me?! See it by yourself

¿Te imaginas cómo me sentía? ¿No me creéis? Comprobadlo vosotros mismos.

That’s right, 183 bpm. When did that happen? In the moment I was “pulled” to the door and  saw that 16.500 feet are f***ing high!! I know, I know, if you have fear of heights, you won’t feel it when jumping out of the plane. What you feel is fear to death!! I have to say that when I saw the second tandem falling (I didn’t see the first tandem jumped out) is when I thought “shit!! you really fall fast”. In just couple of seconds they were “gone”.

Are you still wondering if I did have fun? Of course I did, as soon as the parachute opened and I was able to take control of it for a few minutes, ha,ha,ha.

¿Todavía os estáis preguntando si me divertí?

But I also enjoyed the flight, I mean, when you choose to jump out of 16.500 feet, you first need to get up there. I choose to jump in Bay of Islands with Skydivezone as I saw their video of “skydiving at sunrise”. In the past 16.500 feet used to be the highest you could jump, but now they even offer 19.000 feet!! I don’t know how long would the free fall be, but from 16.500 you already have around 70 seconds!

Does 70 seconds sound like not so much time? I can tell you, it’s a loooooooooooong time!! Watch your watch and count the times you can (re)think “will the parachute open?” in 70 seconds. Fortunately for me the parachute opened, it couldn’t be other way. In Skydivezone they have two people fully dedicated to fold the canopies. It’s a perfect task sharing: the instructors jump again and again, the packers fold the canopies and the pilots fly the plane. One pilot had skydived once, while the other has never done it yet, I guess pilots are from those that thinks “why I should jump out of a working plane!” 😉

¿70 segundos suena a poco tiempo? 😉

I think it’s time that you judge yourself, so watch the video and let me know what you think: do I look scared? would you do it?
