OnTheRoad: “pisapraos” in the Tongariro Alpine Crossing

Last week I haven’t written so much, but either I had no battery and no internet or we were out until late. I’ll catch up this week and the best way to start is our experience as “pisapraos” in Tongariro alpine crossing. I don’t know a translation for pisapraos, but would be someone that goes hiking without having much idea.

¿why do I say we are pisapraos? Because I don’t know how we wanted to be the first ones to do the new alpine crossing of 28km instead of 20km. You would think 4km more or less wouldn’t make a difference, but it’s not the same climb up 10 and climb down 10 than 10 up, 2down, 3 up, 5 down, 2 up, 2 down. And I don’t mean an easy climb, it was challenging most of the time.

The beginning was easy, until you start climbing huge stairs. It took us three hours to get to the top (including a stop for breakfast).  You start feeling the pain after climbing down to the emerald lakes. Once at the bottom I will thought that we already had the worst part behind us, but I was so wrong!

Although I’m complaining and We were so tired afterwards, the views and the crossing are wonderful. As soon as we left the day return visitors behind, we had the pad for ourselves.

Pisapraos or not, we did a 28km alpine crossing in one day, when people normally doe it in two.
